2013-14 Seniors of Significance

Each year the OSU Alumni Association recognizes the top graduating seniors during the May commencement.  The selection process starts in the fall.

ChEGSA Awards

ChEGSA Awards for 2013-14 were decided through nominations and popular voting by ChEGSA members. Results based voting are as follows:

Wang Receives National Science Foundation Award

Dr. Qingsheng Wang, along with his collaborator from Texas A&M University, was recently awarded a 3-year grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF/CBET) to develop new fire retardant polymer nanocomposites.  Highly flammable polymers have frequently been used in home construction, resulting in polymeric fires causing many deaths and extensive property losses.

Rhinehart Receives the 2013 Fray International Sustainability Award

Sustainability means that both the present and the future implications of all issues are considered (economic, political, social, resources, safety, etc.).  Sustainable solutions balance all issues; they don’t just address a portion of the problem, or benefit one sector at the expense of others.  The list of Desirable Engineering Attributes that our School uses to guide students explicitly includes the term, and defines sustainable solutions as “profitable and accepted today without burdening future stakeholders.”

Omega Chi Epsilon Awards – 2013

ΩΧΕ is the chemical engineering honorary society, and each year they use the student community to choose outstanding individuals.    This year, Dr. J. Robert Whiteley was named as the Omega Chi ChE professor of the year, and R. Russell Rhinehart as the graduate teacher of the year.  They selected Katie Haning as the outstanding senior, and Viji Sethuraman as the outstanding graduate student.  Congratulations to all.
